The Healthcare Data Value Chain™ (HDVC) is a framework for managing and maximizing the value of healthcare data. Untangle Health helps organizations re-architect their data strategies with intent, using the HDVC.
Are these Questions Top of Mind?
My organization needs more data.
HDVC enables access to diverse data sources, ensuring you have the necessary information.
We’re struggling to make sense of our data.
HDVC turns raw data into structured, meaningful insights.
We need to extract value and insights from our data.
HDVC ensures that your data becomes a strategic asset.
We struggle to turn data insights into actionable steps.
HDVC offers a clear path from data to decision-making.
I’m concerned about the security of our data.
HDVC embeds robust data security throughout the value chain.
Unlike traditional methods that often focus solely on technical requirements, the HDVC emphasizes the importance of translating raw data into actionable insights and high-value outputs.
This approach ensures that data infrastructure serves as a strategic asset, driving efficiency, safeguarding sensitive information, and ultimately improving business and patient outcomes within a connected healthcare ecosystem.
Healthcare Data Timeline
1980-2000
Forty years ago healthcare data collection, storage, and security looked vastly different. Medical records were primarily paper-based, with physical files stored in filing cabinets, often taking up entire rooms in hospitals. Data security was rudimentary, with locks and keys as the primary defense against unauthorized access. The concept of data integration was nearly nonexistent, leading to siloed information that was difficult to share across departments or institutions.
Pre-Meaningful Use: The Slow Transition to Digital
In the years leading up to the Meaningful Use initiative, healthcare data management began its slow shift toward digital solutions. However, the adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) was sporadic, with many providers reluctant to transition from paper records. The lack of standardized systems and the high cost of digital solutions further slowed progress.
The Introduction of Meaningful Use: A Turning Point
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 introduced the Meaningful Use program, which incentivized healthcare providers to adopt EHRs. This marked a significant turning point, as the federal government mandated the use of electronic records to improve patient care, increase transparency, and reduce healthcare costs. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) further reinforced this shift, requiring health systems to use electronic records, leading to widespread EHR adoption across the industry.
This widespread EHR adoption established a digital baseline for operating a business in healthcare, with organizations leveraging data moats and analytics as competitive advantages. As clinical data exchange among providers increased to simplify transitions of care, care coordination, orders and results, and referrals, other parties increased involvement in exchange. Payers implemented interfaces for eligibility, coverage, claims, and payment workflows.
During this era, the “healthcare technology” industry was initiated, adding efficiencies via programmatic and technical solutions and products that simplified connections among healthcare players.
The Modern Healthcare Data Landscape
Today, healthcare data is largely digital, with EHRs and other digital platforms enabling real-time data access, low-latency queries, and enhanced data security measures. The focus has shifted from simply collecting and storing data to ensuring that data is actionable, interconnected, and secure.
What’s Next With Untangle Health:
Founded in 2020, Untangle Health specializes in addressing the gaps left by the rapid digitization of healthcare data. We’ve watched healthcare organizations transition to EHRs, claims adjudication systems, and a wide array or digital health solutions – building data silos, inconsistent standards, and outdated infrastructure. Now though, enterprises are creating and maintaining modern technology ecosystems with efficiency and strategic growth top of mind. Those that aren’t will be left behind.
Untangle Health stepped in with a comprehensive solution — the Healthcare Data Value Chain™ — that addresses current-day requirements and anticipates future needs in the increasingly data-driven world.
